The best time to see snow leopards is between January and April, when the Himalayan ibex come down from the high mountain. In early April, the snow melts, the long-tailed marmots wake from hibernation, and the birds begin to breed. Seeing a snow leopard is no easy task, but it’s definitely a worthy challenge. Come to Upper Hunza and Khunjerab National Park and give it a try for yourself!

Itinerary
- From Islamabad, we’ll take the highway to Thakot. Then, we’ll head north along the Karakoram Highway to Chilas.
- From Chilas, we’ll drive north along the Karakoram Highway to the village of Upper Hunza. Prepare for a beautiful drive surrounded by snow-capped peaks.
- We will stay in the village of Upper Hunza and search for snow leopards for the whole day. We will leave the lodge in the dark and head for the snow leopard habitat. We will then try to track and observe them by looking for signs of their recent hunts, or their pugmarks. Our main goal is to see snow leopards, but we may also be able to spot wolves. There will also be opportunities to see Himalayan ibex, Bearded vultures (Lammergeier), Himalayan griffon vultures, golden eagles, Himalayan snowcocks, and other birds.

- Travel from Chiras to Islamabad.

＊There are only a limited number of guides who specialize in snow leopard observation. If you are interested, please contact us well in advance. ＊In addition to the snow leopard guides and spotters, there may also be national park staff onboard the observation vehicle. ＊This is a wildlife observation tour. The snow leopard is a particularly difficult animal to observe. The staff will do their best, but we cannot guarantee that you will be able to observe or photograph it. We ask for your understanding in this matter. ＊Depending on when you go, the temperature at the time of observation may be anywhere between minus 5 to minus 20 degrees. The heating in the accommodation is not sufficient, so you will need to prepare well to handle the freezing temperatures.
